HP LaserJet 4000: The Workhorse

The Hewlett Packard LaserJet 4000 laser printer hides great dependability and quality under an unassuming exterior and a deceptively low price tag. This monochrome laser is the perfect choice for any business with a wide range of printing options.

First Impressions: Although the HP LaserJet 4000 isn’t as stylish as some new printers, it certainly makes up for that under the hood. It comes in a simple light beige colour scheme and is unremarkably boxy in shape. Depending upon the feature-set you choose, it sits atop one or two paper trays for a grand total of 500 sheets. An additional feed tray opens neatly on the front of the printer for envelopes, cardstock, labels or other custom print jobs. Prints come out on top, next to a small, easy-to-use control panel. Three buttons and a small LCD display allow you to access various menu options, including paper-handling, resolution and network settings. The printer connects easily to a variety of systems, using either parallel or serial cables, or the optional network card.

Features: The HP LaserJet 4000 boasts a 1200-dpi maximum resolution, but even the 600-dpi mode looks great with HP’s onboard Resolution Enhancement Technology. The printer’s 17ppm maximum print speed isn’t super fast, but it will certainly get the job done. The standard 500-sheet load, in addition to a 100-sheet auxiliary tray means this printer will run a long time between refills. If that’s not enough, you can add an extra 500-sheet tray. The trays will handle legal as well as letter-sized paper with ease. Further options are available with different feature-sets.

Variations:

4000T – exchanges the single 500-sheet tray for two 250-sheet trays

4000N – adds an HP Jetdirect printer server card

4000TN – includes both feature-sets

Other aftermarket options include an extra 500-sheet tray, a 75-envelope power feeder, and a duplex accessory. The RAM can also be expanded up to 100MB.

Final Assessment: The HP 4000 is a great low-maintenance printer for busy offices. Its expansion capabilities mean it can be easily adapted to your specific needs. Of course, it includes HP’s 1-yr standard warranty.
