Composting Update

The composting system has been up and running for a month now. It was easy to start, we collect all the items for it in a small bucket and then open the bin once a day. Every 2-3cm we put in a handful of the Bokashi mix and then leave it alone to ferment. We still don’t know how successful this batch was though. It started to grow mold and we’re not sure if it was supposed to. We have buried the first bucket and are on to our second one, I’ll keep you updated, but if anyone has any tips for us please let us know because we’re all first timers!

Hi Nikki,

I delivered your bokashi bucket to G. a few weeks ago.

As long as the mold is white, everything is going to be okay.

Compressing the compostables after adding the bokashi would be a good thing to do. Did you get a potato masher with your kit? I recently started including it as part of the package. Let me know if you don’t and I’ll get one to you.

Feel free to contact me directly if you have any further questions.

Cheers,

Al

Thanks for the advice Al. The first batch had white mold so we think it was successful, but we think the second batch is bad because the mold is green. We got the masher and we use it. Let me know if there’s anything else we should be doing.

Nikki,

Adding more bokashi and/or a tablespoon of sugar can help stimulate the microbes into doing their work a bit better.

Refer to the instruction sheet I provided with your bucket for more details.

Regards,

Al
